Out of School Hours Learning Initiative (OOSHL)
It is widely recognised that for children academic achievement is only one element of education and learning. Through play, the holistic development of the child is encouraged. This includes their emotional development, the forming and enhancing of social relationships, intellectual and creative stimulation, the opportunity to explore their culture and creativity, and to take risks and develop new skills.
Through the ‘New Opportunities Out of School Learning Fund’ in 2002 PlayBoard established its ‘Out of School Hours Learning Initiative’ which aimed to facilitate children’s learning through the medium of play. A network of schools and play projects, supported by a Play Development Co-ordinator employed by PlayBoard, worked together to provide opportunities for the children taking part in the initiative to maximise their potential, develop their self esteem and to encourage their motivation to learn.
Over 2000 children took part in the three year programme and many were targeted by teachers and/or parents because it was felt they would benefit from participating in the activities offered. The projects which operated out of school hours, during holidays and sometimes on a Saturday, provided a range of fun play opportunities which included team games, arts and crafts, cookery, fun ICT, performance arts and sports.
An overall aim of the initiative was that children had a voice and were encouraged to have a say in the running of the projects. They were consulted and involved in all aspects of the initiative. Following requests from the children an email link-up was set up for the children attending each of the settings (based across Northern Ireland) to communicate with one another. The successes of this led to three away days (Carnfunnock Country Park, Gosford Forest Park, and Belfast for a Disco) where the children from each project were then able to met socially and develop relationships. At the end of the three year initiative children also took part in a three day residential which was aimed at celebrating the initiatives success and thanking all those who took part.
A number of successful outcomes were achieved throughout the initiative and these include:
