PlayBoard welcomes the Education Minister’s recent announcement that the Northern Ireland Childcare Subsidy Scheme (NICSS) will continue into 2026-27, maintaining important financial support for working families to help ease the rising costs of childcare.
Following the extension of the scheme in 2025 to include school-age childcare (SAC) provision, parents with primary school-aged children attending after-school childcare are able to access support with the costs of care. The continued recognition of the value of school-age childcare within the NICSS is important, as it reflects the SAC sector’s vital role as a key component of the childcare infrastructure, enabling parents to work whilst supporting children’s well-being and development through play-based provision.
As the lead organisation supporting and advocating for the development of high-quality, accessible and inclusive play-based school-age childcare provision in Northern Ireland, PlayBoard welcomes this continued support for families.
PlayBoard encourages school-age childcare providers and parents to ensure they are aware of the scheme and the support available. As the Early Learning and Childcare Strategy continues to develop, it will be critical that school-age childcare remains fully recognised and supported as an integral part of the childcare system supporting families and children across Northern Ireland.
