This Parenting Week, let’s look beyond the price tag and think about what our children gain from high-quality school-age childcare.
With the cost of living continuing to put pressure on family budgets, it is understandable that parents look for the most affordable childcare available. But when choosing care for your child before or after school, or during the school holidays, there is more to consider than cost alone.
In Northern Ireland, not all school-age childcare provision is the same. Health and Social Care Trust (HSCT)-registered childcare is subject to specific childcare standards designed to support children’s safety, wellbeing and development. School-based wraparound provision that is not formally registered as childcare does not fall under the same childcare regulatory framework.
So, what difference can registered childcare make?
Safeguarding and peace of mind
Registered settings must meet established requirements regarding safeguarding, staff suitability, training, supervision and adult-to-child ratios. This provides parents with greater assurance that their child’s care is operating within an established regulatory framework.
Time, Space and Permission to play
Play is much more than a way to fill the hours between school and home, in fact, Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child recognises play as a fundamental right of childhood. Play helps children build confidence, develop friendships, learn to manage challenges and make sense of the world around them. Quality school-age childcare gives children opportunities to lead their own play, make choices, explore their interests and enjoy experiences beyond the classroom.
Supporting children’s well-being
After a busy school day, children need opportunities to relax, recharge and simply be themselves. A quality childcare setting offers a different experience from the school day, with supportive relationships, opportunities for outdoor play and space to develop resilience at their own pace. This is particularly important for those children who are not comfortable within a school environment.
Friendships, inclusion and belonging
School-age childcare can bring children together from different schools, backgrounds and communities. These experiences help children build relationships, develop a sense of belonging and appreciate difference. Inclusive, play-based environments can also provide valuable opportunities for children with additional needs to participate and thrive.
Investing in more than childcare
Quality childcare supports children’s physical, social and emotional development while giving parents and carers the confidence to work, study or access training. It can also connect families with their local community and provide children with trusted adults and positive experiences outside the school environment.
We know that every family has different needs and financial circumstances, and affordability matters. This is not about criticising parents’ choices, but about ensuring families have the information they need to make informed decisions about their children’s care.
Our children deserve more than somewhere to wait until home time. They deserve safe, inclusive and playful spaces where they can grow, connect and thrive.
Because when it comes to childhood, the value of quality childcare goes far beyond the price tag.
