Quality Play in Out-of-School Care

Due to increased demand, PlayBoard NI is offering this bespoke training session to primary schools who are providing out-of-school care for their pupils.

Out-of-school services provide an important opportunity for children to play, have fun, make choices, build friendships and simply be themselves. Play has a crucial role in brain development and emotional well-being. It is at the core of children’s physical and social development, supports building of resilience, and contributes significantly to healthy childhood growth, learning and development.

This practical session will give staff the opportunity to step back, reflect on their current play provision and consider how small changes can make a big difference to children’s experiences.

Together, we will explore:

• Why play matters – the importance of play for all children.
• The adult role – when to step in, when to step back, and how adults can support children’s play.
• A Playwork approach – exploring how Playwork principles can enhance your out-of-school provision.
• Planning for play – creating opportunities for meaningful, child-led play within the out-of-school environment.
• Practical ideas and inspiration – simple, achievable approaches that staff can take away and use straight away.

Whether you are looking to refresh your existing provision or simply want to explore how to make out-of-school a more playful, engaging and child-centred experience, this session will provide practical ideas, reflection and inspiration to take back to your setting.

This session will be facilitated by Danielle Crosbie (Play Development Officer, PlayBoard NI) and is suitable for school staff running wraparound and out-of-school provision.
