PlayBoard facilitated two online webinars An Introduction to Playwork on 10 and 17 September, in cooperation with Childcare Partnership (CCP).
The webinars highlighted the need for playwork qualifications within the School-Aged Childcare sector, with playwork being described as the most recognised qualification within this sector by Early Years Social Services Inspectors.
Participants explored the Playwork Principles and other key playwork methodology, helping them to gain an understanding of the playworker’s role in supporting and enriching play opportunities across a range of school-aged childcare settings.
Key topics included:
- The value of freely chosen play.
- The role and responsibilities of a playworker.
- The significance of play for children’s holistic development, including their mental health and well-being.
- Applying the Playwork Principles to real-life practice.
- The United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the child’s right to play.
- Risky play and challenge in play environments and how to respond effectively.
- Intervention styles used in playwork practice.
- The significance of reflective practice.
The interactive sessions stimulated a lot of thought-provoking conversations amongst participants, with perceptions and practice being challenged and reflected upon, particularly when it came to risk and challenge.
Sessions were well attended, with 30 participants across both webinars.
